You can easily index your email messages in Fenn to make them fully searchable — whether they come from the default macOS Mail app, Outlook, or other mail clients.
Follow these steps to enable email file detection and select the correct folder on your Mac.
Step 1: Enable Email File Detection in Fenn
- Go to Index → File Types in the left sidebar.
- Scroll down to find the Email section.
- Make sure the checkbox for Email (.emlx, .eml, .olk15msgsource) is enabled.
- This allows Fenn to recognize and index email message files from different clients.
- You can also select specific extensions if you only want to include certain file types.

Step 2: Locate Your Email Storage Folder
Depending on which mail client you use, your emails may be stored in different folders on your Mac.
📨 Apple Mail (Default macOS Mail App)
Emails are stored as .emlx files here:
/Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library/Mail/
If you don’t see the Library folder:
- Open Finder and press Command + Shift + . (period) to show hidden folders.
- You’ll then see Library → open it → then Mail.
